Surfboards The Basics
A surfboard is a board that a person uses to ride a wave which is called surfing. Surfboards are elongated so the surfer can lie on the board completely, it is flat so they can stand up, and it has fins to ride the wave in the water more easily. Surfboards were first invented in Hawaii and they were called papa hee nalu, they were originally made with wood but nowadays they are made from fiber glass or polystyrene to keep them light in the water.
Different Types of Surfboards
There are many different types of Surfboards including different sizes, brands, styles, designs, and colour. Choosing a surfboard for the first time may be a little confusing because there is a lot of choice, you can either go for a long board, a short board, the fish, or the gun. Different Surfboards are better for different people and different types of surfers. For example the best type of Surf board for a beginner is the longboard because its bigger so you have more space to work with, its thicker which makes it easier to catch waves and its easier to stand up on.
Parts of a Surfboard
Surfboards are made up of many different parts including the bottom, the concave, convex, the deck, the fins, the leash, the nose, the cup, the stringer, and the tail. The bottom of the surfboard is the part that lies in the water, the fins stabilize the board in the water which makes it easier to stand up on the board and maneuver it, the leash fixes on the surfboard and then wraps around the surfers leg so the board doesnt get washed away in the water when you are off board, and the stringer is a thin piece of wood running from nose to tail that increases the strength of the board. Boards have different amount of stringers and some have no stringers.
